This website is an artwork and an archive for FRAGMENTS (2016–ongoing), Rayyane Tabet's ongoing multi part project which centers on Max von Oppenheim’s archeological dig that took place in Northeast Syria at the turn of the 20th century and the subsequent destiny of objects and stories uncovered there and beyond. The site features documentation of artworks, exhibitions, research material and critical writing. Driven by a desire to make accessible the material he’s collected since 2016, Tabet identified the digital as the only ‘space’ in which his artistic engagements in image, text and time-based media could be housed and easily accessed on one platform.
This digital platform is decidedly not a web project or online exhibition but rather a relational database, and for Tabet, marks a move away from authorial narrative. Visitors to the site, can search by a variety of terms, including person, artwork, exhibition, and publication, and be introduced to associated records that share established data points. The artist will continue to upload material on this site into the foreseeable future. Although the platform fulfills a conventional archive’s preservation function, the algorithm will continue to generate connections between entities and enable comparative analysis of surrogates of the same source. In so doing, Tabet’s archive advances access to research material, troubles the distinction between source and surrogate and poses questions of value in aesthetic terms.
